Ehkä parhaiten RinneRadiosta tunnettu kitaristi Matti Wallenius lähestyi minua taannoin Tunto -yhtyeensä viime vuonna ilmestyneen Huvi -levyn tienoilta ja hyvä että lähestyi, sillä levy meni ilmestyessään minulta ohi ja osoittautui oikein sympaattiseksi levyksi.

Levy alkaa leikkisissä tunnelmissa Chicken Music -biisin iloisesti hypähtelevällä iloittelulla. Tietynlainen leikkisyys ja mielikuvituksen lento kantaa läpi koko levyn tunnelmien vaihdellessa iloisemmasta öisen rauhallisempiin vetoihin ja kepeisiin maailmanmusiikkivaikutteisiin – tutkimusmatkan tunnelmaa.

Levy on omalla tavallaan helppoa kuunneltavaa – viisiminuuttiset kappaleet menevät ohi hujauksessa eikä tylsää hetkeä tule.

REVIEW: Tunto’s “Huvi”
Posted on August 1, 2015

While one website I spotted this album on called Huvi (Aani) weird jazz, I call the music by Tunto exploratory jazz, for this is nothing close to what I would call weird. Adventurous? Yes it is.

If it is indeed different, it has to do with the type of instruments played. You will hear the charango, a balalaika, and a baglama along with an ‘ukulele, clarinets, mandolins, and guitars, a nice blend of the traditional and the atypical. It comes off like a bunch of guys walking to a folk festival, wanting to sit around and jam and no one knows what they’re about to do. What they do is make music that sounds festive and filled with elements that are true to the standards of jazz while being culture as well, showing their Finnish origins. You might wonder what it would sound like to dig your head full of ukus but you get to enjoy the possibilities with “Lice Picking Music”, or enjoy what it means to get down with “King Kong Music” or “Couscous Music”. The titles are just as unpredictable as the music itself and while it may make you question of its origins, you just take it in, consume, and relax into things. The next time you hear from Tunto, they may end up doing something completely opposite, whatever the opposite of anything is.

Tunto - Huvi
Aani Records (2014)

Tunto: Huvi

★★★★☆

Huvi on Tunnon neljäs levy. Tunto on Matti Walleniuksen juttu.

Lisäksi Tunnon musiikissa akustisilla soittimilla on isompi rooli.

I first had the latest album from experimental jazz group Tunto described to me as "Deerhoof if they made jazz," and I honestly couldn't have put it better myself. This is an incredibly bizarre and quirky pice of music: in just under fifty minutes, you'll hear everything from terrified screams to yodeling (?) to gross squishy mouth sounds, all wrapped up in an impressively jazzy package. Every track feels completely unique. Some are repetitive and minimal, others are incredibly dynamic and evolve over time. But there really isn't a dull moment on this album and while not every track is equally stellar, each one is really worth your time just for its unique mix of electronics, vocals, and superb jazz musicianship. The amount of variety and simultaneous consistency on Huvi is impressive, as represented by the track titles, each of which captures a different object or activity in a type of music (e.g. "Sandcastle Music," "Camel Riding Music"). While these titles certainly are suitable descriptions for each track, I'd say it's feasible to listen to this whole album in any setting or situation you'd want.

Sounds Like: Deerhoof (if they made jazz)
Recommended Tracks:
3 "Midnight Music" One of the more straightforward jazz tracks with some sultry horns and neat percussion
7 "Lice Picking Music" Grossest title and one of the weirdest tracks on here, lotsa wild vocals
8 "Giraffe Music" Very pleasant, lots of nice guitar work
9 "King Kong Music" Pretty heavy electronic focus, has a really nice build and progression, more vocally stuff

ALL ABOUT JAZZ

Tunto: Huvi (2014)

★★★★☆

By ANTHONY SHAW, Published: September 19, 2014

Tunto is a band providing what its Finnish name can be translated into -'a sense of feeling.' Although described disparagingly in one reviewer as veering towards New Age, this is music for a variety of moods. This is reflected in the song titles, on this their fourth to album to date, ranging from Stalking Music via Lice Picking Music to Sandcastle Music!

The compositions are also again all by the driving force of the combo (on this album reduced to a duo), the player of various strings and assorted other instruments, Matti Wallenius. Known principally as the guitarist in Finland's pioneer electro-jazz Rinneradio and Lapp singer Wimme Saari, he has been working with reedist Petri Heimonen for 10 years as Tunto, releasing at regular intervals highly textured and thoroughly recorded albums of a similar instrumental type, maybe categorizable as 'mood music.' This latest is the first without bassist and programmer Jyri Terämaa, and is recognisable as a lighter, more polyrhythmic product.

Handling electric bass himself, while Heimonen plays clarinets (incuding bass) and flutes, Wallenius has a roster of guests adding vocals, rhythms, double bass, yodelling and even 'man speaking Arabic.' As a whole, however, the album offers a range of sonorities dominated by the acoustic interplay between plucked strings and reeds. Some mercurial selections emerge from the list, like Giraffe Music, where the mix of complex rhythms and simple beats and melodies combine in an ever-evolving groove.

Not all tracks are as hypnotic, indeed some are deliberately humorous and light; try King Kong Music, which might even work as a soundtrack to the 1933 classic film. As a whole the album works as more than background music, creeping unrecognised to the foreground of consciousness especially when the various human voices are featured. Its Finnish title Huvi suggests that it is just 'amusement' or 'fun,' but there is definitely more to it than just that!

JAZZRYTMIT (1.9.2014)

Uskokaa huviksenne!"

Tunto: Huvi (Ääni)

On hienoa, että Suomessa riittää näkemyksellisiä kokeellisen musiikin yhtyeitä.
Yksi niistä on Tunto, jonka sävelet toisinaan muistuttavat Pekka Pohjolan
sykähdyttäviä fuusiojazz-virtailuja. Vinoihin instrumentaalisävellyksiin
kätkeytyy runsaasti maailmanmusiikin ja kabareen elementtejä. Kitaristi Matti
Wallenius ja klarinetisti Petri Heimonen ripottelevat teokselle dynaamista
virtuositeettiaan. ★★★★★

SOUND & IMAGE (August 2014)

Tunto - Huvi
Genre: Elektro/Jazz/Pop
Label: Aani Records

Tunto – HUVI

Definite “fun from Finland”; when you first look at that CD cover, you’re wondering “what the heck is THIS”? And now, as you aurally scope out “Balloon Music“, you are still wondering that… though now with a sense of feel for what they are playing, anyway. In fact, if you cruise on through all ten tracks, you’ll find that pieces like “Stalking Music” do indeed “give you a feel” for what the players are thinking about as they play this very interesting music… I can clearly hear the creepers in the back alley on this cute tune. The other thing that strikes me as I listen is that these are very proficient at what they are doing, especially the leader, guitarist Matti Wallenius. My personal favorite tune was the totally cool “Camel Riding Music“… lots of rhythm interchange on this one… you’ve never heard or seen camels like this. This CD gets a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED from my ears, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.97. Get more information at the Tunto website.

TUNTO – HUVI (AANI)

July 29, 2014 by Jay Paul

The title, Huvi, means amusement in Finnish. Playful contemporary music by guitarist Matti Wallenius from Finland, with Petri Heimonen (reeds), Petri Reinikka & Henrik Dunker (percussion), & other friends. This, their 4th CD, has elements of jazz, cabaret, & sometimes even a sense of electronica thanks to the intricate, clockwork-like percussion. Definitely amusing – try it!

Something Different: Tunto – “Huvi”

Saturday, July 19, 2014

It seems there have been a handful of new albums that hit the sweet spot between jazz, folk, and pop, and immersed so deep in the traits of all that when the music rises back above the surface, it sounds quite unlike any of those influences… or anything else for that matter.  Recent recordings by Stein Urheim, Cliff Hines, and the I Think You’re Awesome ensemble create an intoxicating mix of oddball music that is undeniably absorbing and exceedingly tuneful.

Huvi, the newest album by the Tunto ensemble doesn’t range far from that group.  Led by Matti Wallenius, they incorporate a ridiculous array of instruments to pull off their unorthodox sound.  The catchiness of the songs is highly indebted to an intricate rhythmic approach, one that allows melodies to bounce and jostle and groove and stretch out within the environs of the bustling activity.

Tunto translates from the Finnish as “sense of feel” or the sensation of touch.  That squares with the music, which is something of a tactile sonic experience.  It’s also just plain fun.

Your album personnel:  Matti Wallenius (baglama, balalaika, charango, clay whistle, electric bass, guitars & baritone guitar, keyboards, mandolin, percussion, programming, ukulele & baritone ukulele), Petri Heimonen (clarinet, bass clarinet, contra-alto clarinet, concert & bass flutes, tenor sax), Petri Reinikka (snare drum, rimshots, brushes, cymbal), Henrik Duncker (snare drum, brushes, percussion), Tero Siitonen (double bass), Rudi Nerz (Swiss yodeling), Ahmed Abou Elseoud (voice), and Satu Lankinen (voice).

WONDERING SOUND

Pick of the week

By Dave Sumner, Saturday, July 16, 2014

Led by guitarist Matti Wallenius, this vaguely world jazz recording is terrifically strange, yet undeniably tuneful. Similar in instrumentation and presentation to recent Jazz Pick, the ensemble I Think You’re Awesome, this odd mix of folk, jazz, pop, and avant-garde creates music with an incredible diversity but so easy to connect with. Definitely something different. Pick of the Week.
